A...ntigua & Barbuda has achieved limited success at the international level, however, has established itself as one of the stronger teams in the Caribbean region in recent years. Despite its population of only 96,000 Antigua & Barbuda has often outperformed its much larger local rivals throughout its history. The team’s strongest periods have been the 1980s, which included a runners-up finish in the 1988 CFU Caribbean Championship, and also the early 2010s, where they performed strongly in the qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup. After struggling in recent years, there has been a greater focus on developing local players and it is hoped that this policy will result in more long-term success for the national team.
