Introducing Hawaii's Official 2024/25 National Team jersey, manufactured by Millennium Sportswear.
This jersey is more t...han just a uniform; it’s a statement of identity, culture, and the unity of the Hawaiian Islands under one Sovereign.
The National Team Crest:
Inspired by the historic Coat of Arms adopted by the Hawaiian Legislature in 1845, the National Team Crest of the Federation symbolizes providence and protection under a unified monarch. Prominently featured are the royal standards of ancient Hawaiian chiefs—the Pūlo‘ulo‘u, Puela, and Ālia—each representing the protection and refuge provided by themonarchy.
Hanging vertically lies the Hae Hawai‘i, or Hawaiian Flag. The Union Jack honors Hawai‘i’s history as a British Protectorate until Sovereignty and Independence were formally recognized by Great Britain and France in 1843. The eight stripes signify the unity of the eight principal Islands under one monarch, while the vibrant colors reflect ‘ahu ‘ula and mahiole, the traditional feathered cloaks and helmets of the chiefs, embodying the enduring strength andcultural legacy of the Hawaiian people.
The Design:
The pattern of the new Hawaiian Football jersey, named Lapamua, is inspired by the kaona (hidden meaning) that embodies the National Team athletes. Nā ‘Ālapa Hawai‘i, the name given to the National Teams, pays tribute to Paramount Chief Kalani‘ōpu‘u and his renowned ‘Ālapa Regiment, famed for their bravery, physical prowess, and superior athleticism.
In modern times, ‘Ālapa translates to “athletic,” combining ‘Ā, meaning “to blaze” or “ignite,” and lapa, signifying “energetic,” “spirited,” or “mischievous.” The term conjures the image of lightning flashing across the sky—unbounded and uncontrollable—symbolizing the relentless and unstoppable nature of a dominant athlete. Visually, the lapa (lightning) is reflected in the negative space of the design, while poetically it represents the power, force, and unpredictability of lighting as it strikes, mirroring the spirit of Nā ‘Ālapa Hawai‘i—the National Teams.
