Mongolia has ...traditionally been one of the weaker teams in the AFC region and has never qualified for a major tournament. With a national team squad usually comprised entirely of players from the Mongolian Premier League, victories have been rare, however, they have become more competitive in recent years. They have largely performed strongly in their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, defeating Brunei 3-2 on aggregate in the qualifying round to reach the second round for the first time in their history. In the second round they recorded shock victories against Myanmar and Kyrgyzstan, however, were on the end of a 14-0 thrashing to a star-studded Japan.
